New museums for getting carried away
Louvre Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
It took 424 days to fit together the 7,850 pieces of aluminium and stainless steel needed to create the stars that clad the roof. It weighs seven tonnes and, like the rest of the building, was designed by Jean Nouvell.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi is an autonomous institution and has its own collection, born as a result of the cultural agreement between the French government and the city of Abu Dhabi, set to continue for 30 years. As part of the arrangement, France will lend works from its main museums, including the Louvre and the Musée d'Orsay. After several setbacks, the new Louvre will open its doors in 2017, at the same time its neighbour Saadiyat Island, welcomes another of the world’s most important museums, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.
