Surfing dogs in Australia

Surf lovers of all ages meet up from 4 to 11 March to have fun on the ocean waves. Experts, amateurs and dogs all take part in the Noosa Festival of Surfing, the largest surfing event in terms of competitors held anywhere in the world. The festival has been held for 25 years in Queensland (Australia) and since 2012 the Vetshop Australia Surfing Dog Spectacular (5 March) has been one of its big highlights.

The dogs, attired in life jackets, get on their boards and surf the waves with their owners. Surfer and dog trainer Chris de Aboitiz explains that ‘surfing with your dog is the ultimate’ and he will hold workshops during the festival because ‘you need to have good surfing skills yourself, but also dog behavioural skills and a good relationship with your dog’. In addition, the VetShop Australia representatives will also be on hand to offer doggy care tips.
