Hotels enamoured with Cristiano Ronaldo
thlete, gamer, bon vivant and millennial: the intense personality of Cristiano Ronaldo shines through in the two new Pestana CR7 hotels, in Funchal and Lisbon, Portugal. They were opened in collaboration with the biggest tourism company in Portugal, the Pestana Group. The presence of the Real Madrid forward, giant portraits included, is a question of style. The footprints of his football boots are marked on the rugs. And his famous catchphrase “Your love makes me strong. Your hatred makes me unstoppable,” welcomes guests.
The stairs inside have movement sensors that activate cheering sounds, like fans at a stadium. When you get to the rooms, particularly in Funchal, capital of Madeira, it is like going through the corridor between the changing rooms and the pitch: like making a footballer’s entrance. “It’s the most important project in my life,” said Ronaldo. “This is a special time, something I’ve always dreamed of.”
Home, sweet home
The hotel in Funchal was the first to open, because of its intimate relationship with the player: it is his hometown. Anyone staying there can visit the CR7 Museum for free and see Cristiano Ronaldo’s three Ballon d’Ors, 50 medals, four Golden Shoes and more than 200 trophies.
At Cristiano Ronaldo hotels, the underlying philosophy embraces fitness culture and technology. The hotels are equipped with gyms and there are training plans, personalised by the athlete, in each room. You can also download an application with extra exercising tips and running routes through the city, also recommended by him. A combination with a clear target: millennials.
The menu at the in-house restaurants and bars is, of course, dominated by super foods, products with high nutritional value. They include egg-white omelettes with tomato and spinach, buckwheat pancakes and fruit and protein shakes. Perhaps less surprisingly, prices at the CR7 Bar & Bistro, located in the Baixa Pombalina district, Lisbon, are similar to the ones at other restaurants in the area.
But, you will have to shell out from 250 to 1,250 euros to sleep in these temples dedicated to the football star. In Lisbon, with contemporary Art Deco style, the CR7 Suite (the most expensive room) enjoys views of Plaza del Comercio, the biggest square in the Portuguese capital. It has a PlayStation 4 and virtual reality glasses, a 48-inch television, Apple TV and cardiovascular training equipment.
The rooms are just one part of the experience, since the Pestana CR7 hotels aim to be city hot spots. With happy hours and night-time parties on their rooftops, they are aspiring to attract the younger Portuguese crowd and, in 2017, the Spanish and North American ones, too. Madrid and New York will be the headquarters of the two new openings of Pestana CR7, planned for next year.
For those who love football—and Cristiano Ronaldo even more—, the new Pestana CR7 Lifestyle Hotels will be like a second home. His more than 100 million social media followers will be able to enjoy an experience that completes the spectacle in the stadiums, and let them live and breathe sport, even on holiday.
